A WATCH TO DETECT TORNADO
Estimated At approximately 3:00 am CST on December 11,
AlertVU's email and telephone messages and campus loudspeaker system alerted
students of an impending tornado warning and instructed them to seek shelter.
"ATTENTION! A warning has been issued to all students and students in the
dormitory, to be aware of a tornado, a Tornado has been issued for the
Vanderbilt main campus. a watch to detect tornados Immediately and seek shelter immediately! Stay away
from windows and doors. Monitor any news or weather reports. local area for additional
information” reads a warning from Vanderbilt University Public Safety (VUPS). a watch to detect tornado
Students in a dormitory were told to go to the basement
until they received permission to return to their respective rooms, which they
received at around 3:55 am CST.
“A Tornado Alert has expired for the Vanderbilt main campus.
Bad weather is likely to still occur. Please continue to monitor reports on
local weather news," the warning reads. Students are instructed to
immediately call 911 or VUPD at 615-421-1911 for emergencies, or email
alertvu@vanderbilt.edu for non-emergency inquiries.
The National Weather Service organization's Tornado Warning
and Severe Hurricane Warning remain in effect until 4:15 a.m. CST and remains
the state's tornado hour until 5:00 a.m. CST, per Tennessean. Parts of
Mississippi, Kentucky, and Indiana alike continue to be on the lookout for
tornadoes as hurricanes develop or are impending.
"A gust of wind also hit a record high of 78 mph in the
Nashville International Airport area at around 3:00 a.m., according to the
National Weather Service," the Tennessean reported.
Students seek shelter following a campus-wide tornado
warning
Estimates At approximately 3:55 a.m. CST, students were able
to return to their rooms after seeking shelter after the tornado warning.
